The maturity amount of an FD is determined by using the compound interest formula, as most banks compound interest quarterly. Below is the formula used:
A = P (1 + r/n)^(n*t)
where:
A = Maturity amount
P = Principal amount (Initial deposit)
r = Annual interest rate (in decimal, e.g., 6.6% = 0.066)
n = Number of times interest is compounded per year (i.e., if interest is compounded quarterly, n=4)
t = Tenure of the FD in years
Let us understand it with an example. When an investor invests ₹ 1,00,000 in an FD at an interest rate of 6.60% per annum for 3 years, in which the interest is compounded quarterly, they get a total amount of ~₹ 1,21,699 at maturity*.
